This morning while I was getting ready, Hank Morse said, “It’s going to take a looong time to get to work today.” The last time he said that, it took me three hours to get to work. But I thought I would give it a try.

Oops.

So after it took 45 minutes to drive 11 miles, and I still hadn’t hit the second segment (of three) of my drive to work, I turned around and started my work day from home.

Rain may not be snow, but drivers still need to learn to slow down and take it easy for everyone’s safety and commute. Sigh.

A comic about anxiety.

heymonster:

Tech blogger and humor writer Paul Carr recently released his book Sober Is My New Drunk, which details how he solved his drinking problem with the help of social media and why he found the Internet to be more useful than AA to stay clean and sober.

When the Wall Street Journal posted an excerpt of his book on its website, the trolls came out to play. They bet money that he’d be off the wagon in a year, chastising him for not joining AA with comments such as, “CONGRATULATIONS!!! Let us hear how YOUR steps are working for you in 20 years.” Others conveyed hope that Carr would start drinking again because he didn’t join the program.

Carr’s good friend Sarah Lacy came to his defense on PandoDaily, sharing her outrage at the way people are betting on her friend’s life and sharing the nasty things that had been said (primarily in blog post comments) about her throughout her career as a journalist.

We all have our opinions and our preferences. Why do we have to force our beliefs down eachothers throats if we don’t see eye to eye?

On minding your own business and withholding your judgement

A woman in Wellesley pulled up next me at a stoplight and began to berate me, making text motions with fingers and shaking her head, signaling that I shouldn’t be texting while I’m driving.

Well, I wasn’t texting, I was changing music on my iPod…while I was at the stop light. Which, in case you were unaware, is safer than changing it while I’m driving.

Lest anyone forget that I was a reporter that covered some really nasty, deadly car crashes — one in which a man was crushed by tow truck while in the back seat of a friend’s car.

Another accident involved one of my friends. I’ll never forget what he looked like when they pulled him from the wreck.

I’ve seen things that most people only read about, and I can assure you that I won’t be the one you have to worry about.

Why do people have to be so ignorantly judgemental?

My Life as a Band Wife: The Golden Rule

My Life as a Band Wife: The Golden Rule:
mylifeasabandwife:

So there I was, once again, thinking of something I could possibly give my input on. I was trying to gain some inspiration by reading Laura’s posts –as I usually do- and voila! Here it goes.

Whenever you’re associated with any sort of known relationship that requires a lot of smiles,…

The Curation-Over-Creation Trend That Fueled Pinterest's Rapid Growth

The Curation-Over-Creation Trend That Fueled Pinterest's Rapid Growth:
Laura Paine has a simple answer when asked why Pinterest exploded in popularity at this particular juncture in Internet history. The former reporter watched her newspaper cut positions, go from being a daily to a weekly and focus more on creating short, Q&A pieces, video and photo galleries in an effort to cling to dwindling online traffic.

“People aren’t really reading anymore,” said Paine, who now works for the public relations firm InkHouse.

A new Engauge white paper breaks down the make-up of the average Pinterest user and shows that the end result of less reading is more of a focus on content curation than creation. The timing of that trend, combined with a stunning design when Internet users are focusing more on visual than text, has allowed Pinterest to explode in popularity.

“Creation takes a lot of time where curation takes just seconds,” Paine said. “Pinterest allows us all to be thought leaders on fashion, food and travel destinations without needing to do the research ourselves.”

Relationships are a funny thing. Psychologists tell us that the key to a healthy and long-lasting relationship is communication, openness, separate hobbies and keeping the sex life hoppin’. But according to recent research from Bar-Ilan University, the real key to every-lasting love is…

It was only a matter of time before websites similar to the increasingly popular Pinterest started to pop up out of the woodwork. The Fancy describes itself as “part store, blog, magazine and wishlist,” and it’s the store piece that’s really differentiating the platform from its competitor. The site allows you to “Fancy” anything you see on the Web so you can return to it at a later time.

Well, folks, we’re getting there.

On Feb. 7, a three-judge panel in the Federal District Court of the Northern District of California ruled that Proposition 8 is in violation of the constitutional right of gay men and lesbians in California.

Gee, you think?

From The New York Times:

But Tuesday’s 2-to-1 decision was much more narrowly framed than the sweeping ruling of Judge Walker, who asserted that barring same-sex couples from marrying was a violation of the equal protection and due process clauses of the Constitution.

The two judges on Tuesday stated explicitly that they were not deciding whether there was a constitutional right for same-sex couples to marry, instead ruling that the disparate treatment of married couples and domestic partners since the passage of Proposition 8 violated the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause.

“Although the Constitution permits communities to enact most laws they believe to be desirable, it requires that there be at least a legitimate reason for the passage of a law that treats different classes of people differently,” Judge Stephen R. Reinhardt wrote in the decision. “There was no such reason that Proposition 8 could have been enacted.”

Another wonderful day in the beautiful — but windy — Santa Barbara, California. Went for pedicures and errands with Pamela. I always love spending time with her.

Jase finally came and got to see his mom play Skyrim. I started reading about Buddhism, which has been popping up regularly in my life lately.

I had a blast doing Dana’s makeup, which had me wishing I never stopped. I used to be so good and, if I may say so, I did a nice job this evening.

We all went out to a fancy French restaurant— Petit Valentien. The food and service were incredible. I had the pan-seared duck with mashed, spinach, and a fantastic black cherry glaze. It was followed up by (more) creme Brûlée at a restaurant where the waiter forgot Andrew’s dessert.

Also, Pamela bought me three long-stemmed roses. They have the perfect fragrance.

Jase and I came home to find that Harley (chihuahua) had rummaged through the trash. It made me miss my little dog.

Time for Samantha Who? and sleep with my snoring husband.

mylifeasabandwife:

First day in California. Husband is at NAMM learning how to schmooze with other audio nerds and hanging out with his friends.

I woke up at 8am and enjoyed my coffee in the backyard. I also ate four oranges off of the tree. They’re never better than when eaten directly off of the tree — so sweet and Juicy.

Enjoyed a home-made breakfast of eggs, bacon pieces, broccoli, mushrooms and cheese, with a piece of whole grain toast — courtesy of Mark (SFIL).

I spent the day with my MIL, Pamela, SIL, Dana, and Dana’s friend. We stopped to see the butterflies at the Coronado Butterfly Preserve and visited several wineries.

One of the wineries was run by a cool, free spirited couple with two small slinky dogs. I loved the little puppies so much — really made me miss my little Niles. They had all kinds of interesting art, and it smelled gorgeous there. Someone had recently had a fire, it seemed.

We did a little browsing in an artists gallery, where I found a photo album with a dragonfly on it. The cover reads, “don’t dream your life, live your dreams,” in Spanish.

We had dinner at Trattoria Grapolo with Mark and my BIL, Andrew. We had the best calamari I have ever eaten. The food was truly wonderful and the creme brûlée was delicious.

Of course, I am a thousand years old and I’m already tucked away in the camper. I’m sleepy and I miss my husband, but I’m looking forward to tomorrow — pedicure and yoga with Pamela!

Goodnight, everyone. I hope you’re well.

lesliesotelo:

I’ve been watching loads of the Gilmore Girls while I’ve been sick. Controversial, but I love Logan Huntzberger a little too much.

Logan is my favorite of Rory’s boyfriends. She should have married him and still traveled with Obama.
